THE QUICK ANSWER
Reflective insulation addresses radiant heat. Its performance depends on how it is installed within an assembly, including the required adjacent air space. It should not be treated as automatically interchangeable with attic-floor insulation.
Understand the role of the reflective surface
The Department of Energy distinguishes reflective systems from common bulk insulation: the reflective surface reduces radiant heat transfer and needs an adjacent air space to work as intended. Ask about the complete installation, not just the appearance of the foil.

A useful proposal explains the assembly
If you are considering a reflective product, ask where it will be placed and how that location relates to the existing roof, attic and other insulation. An estimate should make the intended application clear.
A photograph of a shiny surface does not tell you how a system is configured. Use the inspection to discuss the space itself, the existing material and any preparation that belongs in the project.
- Where will the reflective product be installed?
- What air space and installation details does the product require?
- What existing insulation will remain?
- Is this proposed instead of, or alongside, another insulation improvement?
Compare options by the work they perform
A reflective installation and additional loose-fill coverage may describe different jobs. Ask why each is being recommended for the inspected area and how it relates to the improvement you want. Comparing only a material label or headline price can leave important differences unexplained.
Tell the team about planned roof work or other changes before the proposal is finalized. The order of the work and future access are practical parts of the decision.
